Ever typed out a message, then paused, wondering: “Does this sound too harsh?” or “Could this be funnier?” WhatsApp now has an answer.

The app is rolling out Writing Help, an AI-powered feature that lets you rephrase, proofread, or change the tone of your messages—right inside the chat. Tap the new pencil icon while drafting, and the AI offers options: professional, supportive, or even funny.

Example? Instead of “Please don’t leave dirty socks on the sofa,” it might suggest:

  • “Please don’t make the sofa a sock graveyard.”

  • “Breaking: Socks found chilling on the couch—please move them.”

  • “Hey, sock ninja, the laundry basket is that way!”

Powered by Meta’s Private Processing technology, WhatsApp says it can generate rewrites without reading your original messages—keeping your conversations private.

Why it matters:
This isn’t just a fun tweak—it’s WhatsApp’s way of keeping users inside its app for quick writing help, rather than sending them off to ChatGPT or other AI tools. It could reshape how we draft messages, from casual chats to sensitive texts that need just the right tone.

Potential downsides / risks:

  • May make conversations feel less authentic.

  • Some users will still question how “private” it really is.

  • Could reduce people’s confidence in their natural writing over time.
